Anybody else annoyed that products can be listed as "2g net carbs" when in reality they have 13g of sugar alcohols? Yeah, it isn't treated like sugar in the body, but it is still carbs!

Re: Sugar alcohols
Fri, February 11, 2005 - 1:51 PMIt's hard to believe that companies get away with it, and that people believe it. I'm sure there's a large group of "failed" low-carb dieters who read 2 net carbs on the package and don't investigate further, or if they do, they don't understand that sugar alcohols can't really be deducted (imnsho). Not to mention that if you eat too many sugar alcohol carbs it can cause major tummy troubles. -

Re: Sugar alcohols
Sun, February 13, 2005 - 7:19 AMI know of at least a couple people who would eat all sorts of stuff sweetened with sugar alcohols and then would quit their diet because it wasn't working.
Personally, the only sweetener I seem to be able to handle is splenda. Anything else makes me craves sweets or causes me to gain weight. (And even too much splenda isn't a good thing.)
On the up side, have y'all seen the low carb yogurt that Dannon is putting out? It's actually low carb (3 gms in the yogurt and 4 gms in the smoothies), and makes up for the fact that I'm not drinking much milk any more. (And it actually tastes good!)

Re: sugar alcohols can't really be deducted
Sun, February 13, 2005 - 2:51 PMwhy not?
It's taken me awhile to figue out exactly what you mentioned. That A) these low-carb chocolates do not seem to help me with my diet/goal/long-term lifestyle changes at ALL, and, B) ouchie, tummy woes.
But I thought sugar alcohols should be deducted. Sorry because I know this has been covered before, but how do they work? -

Re: sugar alcohols can't really be deducted
Mon, February 14, 2005 - 9:10 AMIt's an individual thing. I've found that if I eat a lot of them my body acts just like I am eating sugar. However, some people have no problem at all. It seems odd to me that Atkins endorses sugar alcohols for everyone, yet mentions how aspartame can slow your weight loss like sugar. Perhaps I am being catty, but could it have something to do with the millions of dollars in sugar alcohol rich products the company sells? Hmmmm. -

Re: sugar alcohols can't really be deducted
Fri, April 8, 2005 - 12:04 PMOr maybe it's a moderation issue.. If you "diet" but eat a pound of "suger-free" candy every day you bet it's gonna fail.. but if your dieting and working at it a suger free sweet pnce in awhile can save you from those cravings..
