Dear tribe,
It became glaringly apparent to me that I must have an allergy or something to soy.
Today during a meeting, my very thoughtful boss bought us a low carb coffee cake to share and as soon as I tasted it (Entenman's Carb Control Crumb) I knew it had soy. That distinctive soy taste.
But, this is the problem. When I eat soy, I get an aftertaste in my mouth that doesn't go away. It feels like I ate soap or something foamy. Even after eating two other meals today, I can still feel it in my mouth. Is this soapy feeling something everyone gets from soy, or am I allergic?

Re: Problems with Soy Products
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 3:54 PMI doubt it's an allergy if all you're experiencing is a bad taste in your mouth. I'm not so fond of the after-taste myself, although I do like miso and tofu. Soy milk and flour, however, are made through a chemical process and are far from natural. I've read some alarming articles on the dangers of soy but these could be just alarmist health-nut conspiracy theories (although I doubt it). There are might be more benefits than dangers, not least of which for us is the low carb factor. However, for me (I'm no expert, but I don't like what I've read), I try to use as little soy as possible.
Here are some links if you're interested. I encourage more research and approaching these articles with a critical mind.

Re: Problems with Soy Products
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 4:03 PMMike--
Thanks, I will go to those posts. Now that you mention it, I also have loved tofu and miso for years. I eat tofu at least several times a month and never had this feeling. However, this is from soy flour, so maybe its different.
It's more than an aftertaste though. It almost feels like my mouth is producing saliva from it or that my mouth is swollen. I sometimes get an allergic reaction to eggplant, which causes a cough as it irritates my throat. This does not affect my throat, but it definitely feels like soap. -

Re: Problems with Soy Products
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 4:19 PMYes, I know most of these articles say miso is still good. I think it has something to do with the fermentation process. I think tofu falls in that catagory to a smaller extent although a Japanese study linked heavy tofu use to Alzhiemers. Still, how much tofu and miso do you use?
I have the same reaction to eggplant. I love it but have to avoid it. Food allergies suck. -

Re: Problems with Soy Products
Wed, April 21, 2004 - 2:33 PMI use tofu only about 1-2 times a month normally. I love it, but my husband does not... so now that I am trying to be on a low carb diet, it would give me the go ahead to use more tofu. Even so, maybe once a week at most. Problem is I am not a big meat eater :(:(. Read Reginas article she listed on the dark side of soy. I believe that soy in it's purest form is not an easily digestible food. I did recall giving my daughter as an infant soy formula, because she was having so much gas, and the soy made it so much worse (no duh!!!). But that is what her dr.recommended.
I'm an trying to find other alternatives for baking such. What is whey protein all about? -

Re: Problems with Soy Products
Wed, April 21, 2004 - 3:35 PMFrom what I've read, men should stay away from soy more than women, especially as they get older. There's a plant estrogen in it that lowers testosterone, a much needed hormone for men's health. Testosterone lowers bad colesterol and increases energy and mood for men. Something to think about.
Whey protein isolate is good for all. It makes a good flour but needs other ingredients to work.
LoCarber sells a 5 pound bag for $20.
www.locarber.com/store/index.php
As an example, they have an Irish brown bread made with whey protien and crushed almonds that sounds delicious and is only 4g carbs per serving:
locarber.com/recipes/viewrecipe.php
Let me know if you get this and how you like it.
I've had some moderate success making pancakes with whey protein, eggs and cottage cheese. So it's easy to avoid soy if you want to and if you're willing to put in a little more effort. -

Wed, April 21, 2004 - 3:51 PMOh, and if you want to read more about whey protein benefits:
www.wheyoflife.org/
Couldn't find any dangers other than getting too much protein, which means your body flushes it out without processing it, making your kidneys and liver do extra work. Doesn't sound that bad. Whey protein is also low in lactose, which is good for the intollerant.

Re: Problems with Soy Products
Wed, April 21, 2004 - 1:39 PMRegina, I read the PDF in your post and looked at the website. Good information but I noticed it's from the United Soybean Board. It's not likely you'd get a balanced view from them.
However, I'm not going to stress about it. You'd get sick if you ate too much of anything. -

Wed, April 21, 2004 - 3:38 PMBy the way, I hope I never sound arrogant or smarty-pantsish (hey, a new word!) when I comment on these things. These are all opinions based on information that I've gathered. I don't claim to have complete knowledge and I welcome being proved wrong at any time. :) -

Fri, April 23, 2004 - 10:24 AMTrue, but it was sent by my sister-in-law who has been studying soy and it's effects for years and felt it was accurate information.
